Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) is lonely middle-aged man doing some evening shopping before going home to his sad apartment. On his way home he finds Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) lying in the cold alley. She looks beat up and bruised. It’s snowing and cold outside. Seligman decides her to bring her to his place to clean her up and make her rest. After some tea and rugelach Joe starts to gain some strength and begins to talk about her life. Joe is a nymphomaniac, a sex addict. Seligman seems to be asexual, but he listens attentively and compares Joe’s tales to music, literature and fly fishing. Continue reading
First Official Trailer for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac
This is what I’ve been waiting for! Now it’s finally here. The first trailer for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. There were a lot of discussions in the last few days about how this movie was going to turn out. Apparently Lars gave up final cut on the picture, which saddened and shocked a lot of fans. At the same time looking at this trailer every doubt about the film’s potential loss of awesomeness was completely erased from my mind. Also and in any case I’m sure there will be a director’s cut released on home video so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
We’ve already seen a lot of teasers for the various chapters, but in this trailer we’re given a feel for the overall story. In the last couple days there were also two new posters, which I didn’t talk about since they’re essentially only slightly different from the ones we’ve already seen. The film will be released in Denmark (and Spain) on Christmas Day and while there’s still no official US release date, I’m afraid to say that our British friends will have to wait until March 7th, 2014. And with this news I’m afraid to find out when Swiss art houses will be ready to forget about love. Please announce something Zentropa!

Everybody’s Having an Orgasm in the New ‘Nymphomaniac’ Character Posters
These bad boys were released just today! Once again I have to applaud Lars von Trier for not just being a great filmmaker, but also getting the marketing right. Many filmmakers don’t believe or get involved with promoting their films (looking at you Woody Allen), but we all know that a bit of hype and buzz always gets people in the theater. Aside from being a great idea these character posters for Nymphomaniac look great. They’re not too polished or photoshopped and they recall the visual style of the previous promo material we’ve gotten.
I love that virtually anyone in the film got his own poster. Being a huge Udo Kier fan his one is automatically my favorite, but I also love Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s and Stellan Skarsgård (who looks like he’s raping someone). Connie Nielsen is so sweaty, while Willem Dafoe looks like he’s taking a leak and Shia LaBeouf seems to be caring more about his cigarette than anything else.
The film will be released in Denmark on Christmas Day this year, but the rest of the world will have to wait. Unless of course you can afford to spend the holidays in Denmark, in which case I hate you and please do not let me know about it in the comments section. Joking of course (kind of).
