Watch: Another Appetizer for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac

Another teaser for Lars von Trier’s upcoming Nymphomaniac has premiered today on the official website of the film. The clip features Charlotte Gainsbourg walking towards what seems to be a hospital. Stellan Skarsgård narrates the scene with his warm, raucous voice. The clip is shot in crispy clean black & white and looks gorgeous. It doesn’t really say or show much about the movie, so don’t worry about spoilers.

The description on the website reads: “Chapter 4 – Delirium. Delirium: Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac’s father dies”. That would be Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg)’s father. The film is set to be released on Christmas Day in Denmark and in January 2014 worldwide. Looking good?

Big News for Lars von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’

After releasing three teasers and clips from Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, more exciting news is on its way! It looks like the Danish director shot over 100 hours of footage and now plans to release an 8-episode TV show along with the two films or rather volumes, which are 2 h 30 min each. Sounds like this is going to be quite the erotic epic, although depending on which channel will air the TV show a lot of the explicit sex scenes might get trimmed.

Right now the film is still in post-production, which means they’re editing it. If a TV show is released and how long the two films will be is still open at this point. It’s now clearer why von Trier didn’t make it to Cannes this year. Of course I just hope Lars doesn’t have to cut anything out of the movie because it’s “too long” or for censorship issues. At this point it sounds like the film would get an NC-17 rating in the US.

Each chapter of the film is shot and composed in a different and unique stylistic way. Nymphomaniac stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, Uma ThurmanStellan Skarsgård, Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Udo Kier and Jean-Marc Barr. The film will be released on Christmas Day in Denmark and 2014 everywhere else. Meanwhile here are the three teasers we’ve gotten so far. Enjoy!

Michael Cera’s Short Film ‘Failure’

Did you know Michael Cera was a director too? I didn’t. Here is his creepy/awkward four minute short film Failure, directed and starring Michael Cera himself and a drop dead gorgeous Aubrey Plaza as a stalker invading his home.

I really liked it. The Woody Allen-esque music, composed by Cera; Tobias Datum’s (SmashedKiss of the Damned) dark, but warm cinematography and a completely strange atmosphere, conveyed by two solid performances. Reminded me of a Kim Ki-duk film in it’s themes and of Alex Pardee’s genius video where he “invades” Shia LaBeouf’s house. Cera even says a similar line “Why are you in my house?” echoing Shia asking San Francisco illustrator “What are you doing in my house?”.

Looks like this is the year where the home invasion sub-genre really came back between The Purge being a Fsmash hit at the box office and You’re Next coming out at the end of August.

‘Nymphomaniac’ to be divided in eight chapters

nymphomaniac

Lars von Trier has spilled a couple new details regarding his new film Nymphomaniac. The film is supposed to be presented in two volumes, while the Danish auteur also mentioned that he hopes to introduce a new genre called digressionism. The film about Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac will be divided in eight chapters:

1. The Compleat Angler
2. Jerome
3. Mrs. H
4. Delirium
5. The Little Organ School
6. The Eastern & Western Church (The Silent Duck)
7. The Mirror
8. The Gun

I love von Trier, but when he talks about a “new genre” he clearly is just working his marketing magic, much like his Dogme gimmick. Besides, he has already directed a film with a similar structure in Dogville (2003), but I digress.

Still, Melancholia was my favorite film of 2011 and I highly anticipate this one.
