This list includes only films that had a 2013 release date according to IMDb. If you’re stunned that some films aren’t on this list it’s probably because they are on the 2012 list. My top ten will probably change and be updated, as more (foreign) films get released. As of right now I still haven’t seen Sono Sion’s Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, Catherine Breillat’s Abus de faiblesse and Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto. Yes, that last one was included purely because of the family name.  Continue reading

If I Were the Oscars 2014: My Favorite Film Achievements of 2013

how_oscar_dvds_helpand_hurt
I’m sure every year cinephiles all over the world are heartbroken or at the very least bummed that their favorite films of the year weren’t even considered by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I still naively hope that it will get better the next year and that they might get it “right”, but it’s useless. I stopped believing that the 9-10 Best Pictures nominees represent the years best films. I don’t even watch all of the nominees anymore, just the ones that look interesting.  Continue reading

Review: Alexander Payne’s Nebraska (2013) – A Genuinely Heartfelt, Humanistic and Realistic Father-Son Road Trip Film

nebraska
*Spoilers, y’all*
Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) is old, tired and confused. He’s had a tough life. He fought in the Korean war. He may or may not have married the wrong woman (June Squibb). All he has left are his two sons David (Will Forte) and Ross (Bob Odenkirk) and his booze. For once in his life he wished he had something more. So what if he won a million dollars? That would be pretty cool. Of course it would also be too good to be true, but his good-hearted son David decides to drive him all the way from Montana to Nebraska anyway.  Continue reading

The nominees for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced and while we all know how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) doesn’t really deserve to be taken seriously, I still think these awards are fun to watch. They’re entertaining, get you pumped for the Oscars and it’s always somewhat of a good time. Among the top nominees this year there are Spike Jonze’s Her, 12 Years a Slave, American HustleCaptain Phillips and Gravity. The official ceremony will take place on January 12th, 2014 at The Beverly Hilton and is hosted by Tina Fey & Amy Poehler. Take a look at the nominees in the film categories.  Continue reading

Hell Yes! First Trailer for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska

Finally! The first trailer for the much-anticipated and critically acclaimed new film from Alexander Payne: Nebraska. The film premiered at Cannes this year and Bruce Dern, who is co-starring with Will Forte, won the best actor award. This looks like a funny, quirky road-trip comedy/drama from the director who has brought us great films such as About Schmidt and Sideways.

The film was shot in black and white and looks gorgeous. As a fan of the director, the talent involved and the good buzz it’s been getting I can’t wait to see this film. The film opens November 22nd, 2013 and already seems to be a top contender for next year’s Academy Awards. Take a look yourself! Oh, and here’s the first b&w poster as well. Looking good?
