Mini-Review: Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave (2013) – True Story, Bro!
Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free man living in Saratoga Springs, New York with his wife and children. He works as a carpenter and loves to play the violin in his free time. One day two men offer him an opportunity to make easy money working with them for a circus. First Trailer for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave
(Somewhat) critically acclaimed director Steve McQueen has a new film coming out, starring (guess who?) Michael Fassbender. He is not the lead however, that would be Chiwetel Ejiofor. Also co-starring: Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and a lot of other talented people.
12 Years a Slave tells the true story of a free man that becomes a slave and then has to fight for his freedom. The way this trailer is cut and scored (good ol’ Hans Zimmer) it looks like they’re aiming at winning every Oscar in every category. Starting with costume design all the way to best picture. Will they succeed? Just watch out for the Weinsteins!
As someone that enjoyed McQueen’s previous work so far (Shame and Hunger) I am kind of looking forward to this film, although it looks too Oscar-baity so far. The film will be out in limited release October 18th, 2013 in the US. The rest of the world will have to wait, as always.
