‘Bad’ Movies You Watched Last Week?

You know that feeling of watching a film that is so bad it pisses you off you actually wasted your valuable time on it? I certainly do. I was reminded of this ugly feeling when I watched what I thought was going to be a nice indie comedy, but turned out to be a really shitty movie, frankly speaking. I rated it a 1.5 (out of 10), which I rarely do (1 is my lowest rating). I gave it a 0.5, because this film doesn’t even deserve the lowest rating, that would be some kind of achievement. How pretentious of me, I know, but I hated this film and I don’t recommend it to anyone, unless you’re a horrible person like the character in the film. Maybe then you might sympathize with her. This is the first film of 2013 I’ve seen so far. I still recommend my review though!

The Lifeguard (2013) – 1.5 (IMDb 5.9) – Drama, Comedy (USA)

By the way, I only wrote this review, because I promised I would do so in my post where I announced the trailer for it. I like to keep my promises. I don’t like trashing films, because a lot of people put work into them and some of them genuinely believe in what they’re doing and are trying to do a good job. However with a film like The Lifeguard the director’s terrible attitude and incompetence obliterates everything else, and I can’t help, but see a terrible end product that is probably mostly her fault. At the end of the day I’m judging the film, as a piece of art, and the good people that worked on it are casualties of this war called film criticism.

 

Review: The Lifeguard (2013)

Leigh (Kristen Bell) is an almost thirty years old reporter working in the City. When the man she’s dating is getting engaged and she feels that her article about a man living with a tiger isn’t taken seriously she decides to move back to her hometown in Connecticut. Once there, she doesn’t have much to do. She reconnects with a couple friends, she reprises her high-school job as a lifeguard and hangs out with a couple local punks. Meanwhile her parents are uncomfortable with her moving back in (at least her mother is), her friends think she’s an arrogant selfish bitch (rightfully so) and the sixteen year old guy (David Lambert) she’s sleeping around with doesn’t think twice about leaving her to her miserable existence and move on with his life.  Continue reading →

First Trailer for ‘The Lifeguard’ starring Kristen Bell

Ever since watching Heroes, when I still watched television, I fell in love with Kristen Bell. Since then she hasn’t done a lot of good movies, in fact with every new project I felt like believing a little less, that she might ever come back. The Lifeguard seems like the turnaround. Gaining positive buzz at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and with a currently solid rating on IMDb, this could be the Kristen Bell film we’ve been waiting for (whatever that phrase means).

The Lifeguard looks like your typical “arrested development” type of movie, with a young adult (yes, that’s a reference) never wanting to grow up. While this topic might be presented to us so much because most moviegoers are teenagers I still find it very topical of our times and subject that allows for great drama and cinema (like Jason Reitman’s film starring Charlize Theron).
This trailer looks like your charming little Sundance indie, with blending comedy and drama, and even throwing some romance in there: It’s all about finding yourself.

The film comes out on VOD July 30 of this year and will be out in limited release August 30th, 2013. I’m excited for it not only because of Kristen Bell, but also because it’s a debut feature from a female director (Liz W. Garcia), and I’ll always say we need more women at the helm. If it’s half as good as Young Adult I’ll be happy. I won’t tell you about the story, because: Watch the trailer.
