Review: Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Vol. II is Misanthropic, Melancholy and yet Marvelous
*SP( )ILERS*
Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is numb. She can’t feel anything. Her vagina has become completely insensitive to any kind of sexual stimulation. Her husband Jerôme (Shia LaBeouf) is not enough to satisfy her. After all as much as he’d want to, he can’t fill all her holes at once. Time to experiment! What about a threesome with two extra-large negroes? Not working. How about some S&M with Jamie Bell? That works for a while, although it’s a problem, because Joe/Fido now has a little son and she can’t just leave him at home alone, can she? Pretty soon physical pain is not enough for her anyway. Time to start thinking about quitting. Continue reading
Mini-Review: Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer (2013): It’s Like Noah Only in a Dystopian Future and on a Train, Also: Lots of Snow and Ice and Brrr
Welcome aboard the Snowpiercer: A magical train that has been running for 18 years now, safely transporting the last human survivors in circles around the world. Global warming has rendered earth uninhabitable: The year is 2031 and our green planet has turned into a white popsicle. Unhappy with the dictatorship on the train Curtis Everett (Chris Evans) decides to take matters into his own hands and start a revolution. His mission? To get to the end of the train where evil Ed Harris, I mean Wilford, is controlling the sacred engine. How long will it take? Just about two hours, give or take. Continue reading
Sexy New Posters for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac and More
A lot of new exciting Nymphomaniac news! I haven’t been updating for a while because it seemed like there was a new still, poster or clip released every day these past few weeks. However like sexual tension it can only build up so long before you just need a release. So here are a few goodies for you as the film’s debut in Denmark is nearing, Zentropa‘s promotion team is remembering audiences why they are considered marketing geniuses. With a film like Nymphomaniac, the very subject matter is controversial and enough to inspire media to write about it. Releasing sexy posters that get censored from Facebook and clips (the so called appetizers) that get removed from YouTube helps as well, of course. Not to worry, though: There’s always Vimeo and the film’s official website of course. Continue reading
Everybody’s Having an Orgasm in the New ‘Nymphomaniac’ Character Posters
These bad boys were released just today! Once again I have to applaud Lars von Trier for not just being a great filmmaker, but also getting the marketing right. Many filmmakers don’t believe or get involved with promoting their films (looking at you Woody Allen), but we all know that a bit of hype and buzz always gets people in the theater. Aside from being a great idea these character posters for Nymphomaniac look great. They’re not too polished or photoshopped and they recall the visual style of the previous promo material we’ve gotten.
I love that virtually anyone in the film got his own poster. Being a huge Udo Kier fan his one is automatically my favorite, but I also love Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s and Stellan Skarsgård (who looks like he’s raping someone). Connie Nielsen is so sweaty, while Willem Dafoe looks like he’s taking a leak and Shia LaBeouf seems to be caring more about his cigarette than anything else.
The film will be released in Denmark on Christmas Day this year, but the rest of the world will have to wait. Unless of course you can afford to spend the holidays in Denmark, in which case I hate you and please do not let me know about it in the comments section. Joking of course (kind of).
So what are your favorite posters? And what do you think is going through their mind as they are climaxing?

Big News for Lars von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’
After releasing three teasers and clips from Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, more exciting news is on its way! It looks like the Danish director shot over 100 hours of footage and now plans to release an 8-episode TV show along with the two films or rather volumes, which are 2 h 30 min each. Sounds like this is going to be quite the erotic epic, although depending on which channel will air the TV show a lot of the explicit sex scenes might get trimmed.
Right now the film is still in post-production, which means they’re editing it. If a TV show is released and how long the two films will be is still open at this point. It’s now clearer why von Trier didn’t make it to Cannes this year. Of course I just hope Lars doesn’t have to cut anything out of the movie because it’s “too long” or for censorship issues. At this point it sounds like the film would get an NC-17 rating in the US.
Each chapter of the film is shot and composed in a different and unique stylistic way. Nymphomaniac stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, Uma Thurman, Stellan Skarsgård, Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Udo Kier and Jean-Marc Barr. The film will be released on Christmas Day in Denmark and 2014 everywhere else. Meanwhile here are the three teasers we’ve gotten so far. Enjoy!
