This list includes only films that had a 2013 release date according to IMDb. If you’re stunned that some films aren’t on this list it’s probably because they are on the 2012 list. My top ten will probably change and be updated, as more (foreign) films get released. As of right now I still haven’t seen Sono Sion’s Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, Catherine Breillat’s Abus de faiblesse and Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto. Yes, that last one was included purely because of the family name.  Continue reading

If I Were the Oscars 2014: My Favorite Film Achievements of 2013

how_oscar_dvds_helpand_hurt
I’m sure every year cinephiles all over the world are heartbroken or at the very least bummed that their favorite films of the year weren’t even considered by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I still naively hope that it will get better the next year and that they might get it “right”, but it’s useless. I stopped believing that the 9-10 Best Pictures nominees represent the years best films. I don’t even watch all of the nominees anymore, just the ones that look interesting.  Continue reading

Fantastic Fan Posters, Drawings and Behind the Scenes Set Pictures for Spike Jonze’s Her (2013)

francoher
In case you didn’t notice I was a huge fan of Spike Jonze’s Her. It’s safe to say that I wasn’t the only one, because I’ve had the pleasure to discover a great deal of very creative fan art on the official website for the Spike Jonze love story. It’s a cool website by the way, if you liked the film I’m sure you’ll enjoy browsing it and find out “everything about everything”. Actually, it’s a blog. I’m sorry: A Spike Jonze Blog. Even better!  Continue reading

Film Analysis: Spike Jonze’s Her (2013)

HER
Spoiler Alert

Hello, I’m here and I’m going to discuss Spike Jonze’s new film Her in as much depth as I possibly can. If you haven’t seen the Spike Jonze Love Story, I highly recommend watching the film, before reading this essay. If you don’t do that, there will be literally no future for you. Your operating system will dump you and replace you with thousands of sexy OS’ and you will never finish that silly pointless hologram video game. Just kidding, but also not. Watch Her first, then come back and let me know your thoughts in the comments section. Thanks.  Continue reading

Mini-Review: Electric Dreams (1984) is the Definition of Cheesy 80s Cinema

electric dreams
Miles Harding (Lenny von Dohlen) is an architect living in San Francisco. One day, after a conversation with one of his colleagues he decides that buying a portable electronic agenda is a great idea to better organize his work. At the store they’re all out of whatever you’d call the precursor of an iPad, so he gets a personal computer instead. After discovering a lot of cool features, he decides to download all the data from his bosses’ computer. One evening he accidentally spills a bottle of champagne on his PC. Ever since that incident the thing starts to develop some sort of sentient artificial intelligence. Oh and then there’s some stuff about Virginia Madsen and a cello, but I was mostly interested in the vintage technology part, so I didn’t really pay attention to that.  Continue reading

golden-globes-logo
The nominees for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced and while we all know how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) doesn’t really deserve to be taken seriously, I still think these awards are fun to watch. They’re entertaining, get you pumped for the Oscars and it’s always somewhat of a good time. Among the top nominees this year there are Spike Jonze’s Her, 12 Years a Slave, American HustleCaptain Phillips and Gravity. The official ceremony will take place on January 12th, 2014 at The Beverly Hilton and is hosted by Tina Fey & Amy Poehler. Take a look at the nominees in the film categories.  Continue reading

Second Trailer for Spike Jonze’s ‘Her’

A Spike Jonze Love Story. What could be better? Spike Jonze’s Her remains my most anticipated film for 2013, a title previously held by his ex-wife Sofia Coppola and her new movie The Bling Ring. Precisely because of my excitement and and anticipation for Her I will force myself not to watch this second trailer. Problem is it becomes really hard to comment on something I haven’t even watched. At the same time however I want to contribute, even if not many people actually read this blog, to the buzz for the film, which is apparently really good. Getting such a romantic film from him is just a dream come true for a fan of the director such as myself.  Continue reading
