Watch: Spoof of Sofia Coppola’s Upcoming ‘Little Mermaid’ Film

Funny-or-Dies-The-Little-Mermaid
Well, this is only mildly funny. A couple days ago Funny or Die posted a spoof for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming The Little Mermaid film. If you remember back in March it was announced that the Lost in Translation and Somewhere director was going to be at the helm of a live action adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairytale. Because this news seemed so outlandish and far from anything Coppola has done so far the internet didn’t waste anytime and sure enough we got our first spoof (and the movie isn’t even out yet).  Continue reading

Film Analysis: Darren Aronofsky’s Noah (2014)

Noah-2014-Film-Wallpapers-Wide-3
1. Introduction
I should probably preface this essay by saying that Darren Aronofsky is one of my favorite contemporary American filmmakers and that I am a born-again Christian.  I will try to analyze Noah (2014) from a biblical standpoint and as a work of art. In the first section I’ll discuss how accurate and faithful Aronofsky is to the Bible text (Genesis chapters 6-9). Whereas in the second part I’ll share my opinions on the film divorced from any specific spiritual context (if that’s even possible).  Continue reading

This is a spoiler filled discussion of Sofia Coppola’s latest effort: The Bling RingThis is not a review. If you haven’t seen the film yet I suggest you do that before to fully appreciate this piece. I warned you, if you keep reading I’m assuming you have seen the film or don’t care about spoilers. Either way: Thank you for reading.

Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (2013)

VIDEO_Bling_Ring_Tr_343983a
Marc (Israel Broussard) is a quiet teenager that arrives as a new student at Indian Hills High School in Calabasas, California. Most kids seem to ignore him or think he’s weird, but Rebecca (Katie Chang) is nice to him. She introduces him to her girlfriends and pretty soon they become best friends. They both have a passion for celebrities and their expensive lifestyle and living in Southern California’s wealthy neighborhoods access to their homes is easier than you’d think. Taking advantage of rich people’s scarce attention for security, they are able to break in to their home and get a taste of their stuff. What starts out as innocent home invasion out of boredom, slowly turns into a compulsive impulse to burglarize several celebrity homes in the Hollywood Hills area. Being just teenagers of course they love bragging about the robberies at parties and so it’s only a matter of time before they get caught.  Continue reading

Crossover Marketing: Spring Breakers vs. The Bling Ring

Some people lamented the lack of marketing for The Bling Ring, especially in terms of social media. While A24 might look lazy or uninterested in marketing Sofia Coppola’s new film it’s probably just a matter of limited resources. In other words: It’s a new studio, they don’t have a lot of money.

As these kinds of things go, sometimes the lack of funds forces marketers to get ingenious and inventive. In this case, A24 decided to promote two of their films at once in what I like to call Crossover Marketing. ‘Crossover’ what? Crossover Marketing. What do you mean by that? Well, it’s basically cross-promotion, but I like the idea of having invented something new.

Here’s what I mean. For the release of Spring Breakers on home video, they posted this pretty picture on their Facebook page. Kind of genius, right?

Favorite quotes and moments from The Bling Ring trailers

I still haven’t had a chance to see Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, but I’m so jazzed for it. In the meantime here are my favorite quotes and moments from the trailers so far, besides the obvious, but still awesome Let’s go shopping!

cute dress
Laurie (Leslie Mann): “That’s a cute dress – Did you get a new dress?”
Nicky (Emma Watson): “Mm-hmm.”

dog
Marc (Israel Broussard): “You can’t steal her dog.”
Rebecca (Katie Chang): “But he likes me!”

lindsay
Rebecca (Katie Chang): “Did you speak to any of the victims?”
Detective/Police Officer: “I’ve spoken to all of the victims.”
Rebecca (Katie Chang): “Really? What did Lindsay say?”

Katie Chang is definitely what I’m most looking forward to in this movie, both in terms of performance and eye-candy. She also reminds me of someone I used to know. I so can’t wait to see this film and I’m totally jealous of everyone that has already seen it or will see it before me.

Brand New ‘Bling Ring’ Featurette

With The Bling Ring hitting theaters this very weekend it was about time we got an exciting new featurette!

In this clip director Sofia Coppola, some of the cast members (Emma Watson and Israel Broussard) and producer Youree Henley discuss the movie and the events surrounding the real ‘Hollwood Hills Burglar Bunch’. Sofia explains how she wanted the tell the story “from the kid’s point of view”. Henley adds that the youngsters didn’t necessarily want to rob the celebrities, but were more interested in being part of their lifestyle and things just escalated. There’s also some never seen before footage.

Very excited for it, even if it looks like Sofia is making fun of the ‘gang’. In my opinion that’s just the marketing team playing to people’s expectations. Knowing Coppola’s films she always loves and sympathizes with her characters. That’s probably also the reason why the reviews have been ‘mixed’ so far: People would prefer her to just condemn them, but that would be a way too narrow-minded and her films are anything but that.

Sofia Coppola’s new film is about a group of teenagers robbing Hollywood celebrities like Paris Hilton (who has a cameo in the movie), Lindsay Lohan, Miranda Kerr and Audrina Patrigde (of MTV’s The Hills fame). The crime/comedy/drama opens in the US in limited release this weekend (five theaters) and expands to 500+ on Friday, June 21st.

Taissa Looks Enticing

It’s always fun to read what people say on IMDb message boards. Someone on The Bling Ring board claimed that lovely actress Taissa Farmiga wasn’t “hot” or “sexy enough” to play her part. I beg to differ. Especially after this picture uploaded on Facebook today. I think she looks gorgeous and those tattoos are absolutely darling. Wouldn’t you agree?

New ‘Bling Ring’ Pictures

With the nearing release of Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring in the States, I am getting very excited for the film. The movie’s official Facebook page has been uploading lots of new pictures and stills. Here are the ten that stuck out for me, you’ll notice that most of them feature Katie Chang: That’s because her performance is what I look forward most in terms of acting. It helps that she is so incredibly gorgeous. What’s also apparent, is Harris Savides’ (RIP) stunning cinematography.

Genius ‘Bling Ring’ Marketing

The movie I’m anticipating most this year is definitely Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, although Swiss audiences will have to wait two whole months more than our lucky American friends. Meanwhile I’m getting reminded everyday of the film’s nearing release, courtesy of the good social media marketing on Facebook. Pics like this one are exactly what I’m talking about.
