I’m always a fan of clever marketing and certainly Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac had one of the best executed film marketing campaigns lately. It all started with a the minimalist, yet iconic teaser poster you can see above (Lars’ idea by the way) and then it went on to provide us with some orgasmic character posters, lots of appetizers and great interviews. As the film has now hit VOD and should hopefully be soon available in its intended, uncensored cut, the film’s official Facebook page posted A Guide to Naughty Eroticons. Continue reading
Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is numb. She can’t feel anything. Her vagina has become completely insensitive to any kind of sexual stimulation. Her husband Jerôme (Shia LaBeouf) is not enough to satisfy her. After all as much as he’d want to, he can’t fill all her holes at once. Time to experiment! What about a threesome with two extra-large negroes? Not working. How about some S&M with Jamie Bell? That works for a while, although it’s a problem, because Joe/Fido now has a little son and she can’t just leave him at home alone, can she? Pretty soon physical pain is not enough for her anyway. Time to start thinking about quitting. Continue reading
“Perhaps the only difference between me and other people is that I’ve always demanded more from the sunset. More spectacular colors when the sun hit the horizon. That’s perhaps my only sin.”
– Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) in Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 Continue reading

Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) is lonely middle-aged man doing some evening shopping before going home to his sad apartment. On his way home he finds Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) lying in the cold alley. She looks beat up and bruised. It’s snowing and cold outside. Seligman decides her to bring her to his place to clean her up and make her rest. After some tea and rugelach Joe starts to gain some strength and begins to talk about her life. Joe is a nymphomaniac, a sex addict. Seligman seems to be asexual, but he listens attentively and compares Joe’s tales to music, literature and fly fishing. Continue reading
What actress wouldn’t want their first film to be with Danish auteur Lars von Trier? Right? Even if it involved wearing a prosthetic vagina and being mostly in the buff with Shia LaBeouf? At 23 year of age, Stacy Martin a beautiful, fresh-faced actress got her first acting gig in Nymphomaniac Volume I & II. Like you, I had no idea she existed before, but now I am intrigued to know more about her. How did that happen? What did Lars see in her? And what will she do next? Continue reading
Normally, I wouldn’t post actors interviews for upcoming (or existing) films. Since however I’m incredibly excited for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac and Shia LaBeouf doesn’t say the usual, expected things in this clip, I thought I’d post it. Zentropa, the Danish studio founded by von Trier and behind Nymphomaniac, has been posting a lot of goodies, so if you are on YouTube I’d recommend subscribing to their channel. Continue reading
A lot of new exciting Nymphomaniac news! I haven’t been updating for a while because it seemed like there was a new still, poster or clip released every day these past few weeks. However like sexual tension it can only build up so long before you just need a release. So here are a few goodies for you as the film’s debut in Denmark is nearing, Zentropa‘s promotion team is remembering audiences why they are considered marketing geniuses. With a film like Nymphomaniac, the very subject matter is controversial and enough to inspire media to write about it. Releasing sexy posters that get censored from Facebook and clips (the so called appetizers) that get removed from YouTube helps as well, of course. Not to worry, though: There’s always Vimeo and the film’s official website of course. Continue reading
This is what I’ve been waiting for! Now it’s finally here. The first trailer for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. There were a lot of discussions in the last few days about how this movie was going to turn out. Apparently Lars gave up final cut on the picture, which saddened and shocked a lot of fans. At the same time looking at this trailer every doubt about the film’s potential loss of awesomeness was completely erased from my mind. Also and in any case I’m sure there will be a director’s cut released on home video so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
We’ve already seen a lot of teasers for the various chapters, but in this trailer we’re given a feel for the overall story. In the last couple days there were also two new posters, which I didn’t talk about since they’re essentially only slightly different from the ones we’ve already seen. The film will be released in Denmark (and Spain) on Christmas Day and while there’s still no official US release date, I’m afraid to say that our British friends will have to wait until March 7th, 2014. And with this news I’m afraid to find out when Swiss art houses will be ready to forget about love. Please announce something Zentropa!
These bad boys were released just today! Once again I have to applaud Lars von Trier for not just being a great filmmaker, but also getting the marketing right. Many filmmakers don’t believe or get involved with promoting their films (looking at you Woody Allen), but we all know that a bit of hype and buzz always gets people in the theater. Aside from being a great idea these character posters for Nymphomaniac look great. They’re not too polished or photoshopped and they recall the visual style of the previous promo material we’ve gotten.
I love that virtually anyone in the film got his own poster. Being a huge Udo Kier fan his one is automatically my favorite, but I also love Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s and Stellan Skarsgård (who looks like he’s raping someone). Connie Nielsen is so sweaty, while Willem Dafoe looks like he’s taking a leak and Shia LaBeouf seems to be caring more about his cigarette than anything else.
The film will be released in Denmark on Christmas Day this year, but the rest of the world will have to wait. Unless of course you can afford to spend the holidays in Denmark, in which case I hate you and please do not let me know about it in the comments section. Joking of course (kind of).
So what are your favorite posters? And what do you think is going through their mind as they are climaxing?
Another teaser for Lars von Trier’s upcoming Nymphomaniac has premiered today on the official website of the film. The clip features Charlotte Gainsbourg walking towards what seems to be a hospital. Stellan Skarsgård narrates the scene with his warm, raucous voice. The clip is shot in crispy clean black & white and looks gorgeous. It doesn’t really say or show much about the movie, so don’t worry about spoilers.
The description on the website reads: “Chapter 4 – Delirium. Delirium: Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac’s father dies”. That would be Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg)’s father. The film is set to be released on Christmas Day in Denmark and in January 2014 worldwide. Looking good?
