Check it Out: Fox Searchlight Creates a Lego Replica of The Grand Budapest Hotel
Tomorrow Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel will be released on Blu-Ray & DVD. As of today the film has earned $58 million at the American box office and over $100 million worldwide, making it by far his highest grossing film to date. Looking at Anderson’s filmography it’s easy to see why: The Grand Budapest Hotel is a very entertaining film, plot-heavy and star-filled. Fox Searchlight’s marketing push has been just as creative and quirky as Anderson’s films. I especially liked when they revealed the recipe for the Courtesan au Chocolat. Continue reading
Watch: Harmony Korine Directs Dior Addict Ad
“I got Escape! Calvin Klein Escape! Mix it up with Calvin Klein Be. Smell nice? I smell nice!” That’s a line from Aliens’ (James Franco) monologue in Harmony Korine‘s Spring Breakers, where he shows the girls all of his stuff (or shit). Who would have thought that the director of films which are mostly about white trash characters like Gummo (1997), Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) or Trash Humpers (2009) would go on to direct an ad for Christian Dior, one of the top French fashion houses? Certainly not me, but it works. Take a look!

Contemporary horror master Eli Roth is back in the director’s chair, after 7 years of not directing a feature film. After releasing Hostel: Part II in 2007, Roth directed the short film within a film Nation’s Pride for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, he wrote two rather disappointing films (Aftershock and The Man with the Iron Fists), he tried acting again (please, don’t) and of course he’s been super busy slapping his awesome name on every new horror film, I’m sorry, I mean he’s been doing a lot of producing. Watch: Spoof of Sofia Coppola’s Upcoming ‘Little Mermaid’ Film
Well, this is only mildly funny. A couple days ago Funny or Die posted a spoof for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming The Little Mermaid film. If you remember back in March it was announced that the Lost in Translation and Somewhere director was going to be at the helm of a live action adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairytale. Because this news seemed so outlandish and far from anything Coppola has done so far the internet didn’t waste anytime and sure enough we got our first spoof (and the movie isn’t even out yet). Gia Coppola‘s debut feature Palo Alto (2013) is currently my most anticipated film. It should be available in less than one month, but it seems like eternity. In the meantime I’ve been playing the trailer on repeat, I’ve been watching Gia’s short film Non Plus One and I’ve also been listening to the amazing song from the trailer. As I re-watched the trailer multiple times certain lines started sticking out for me and I know I should be cautious, because it’s only a trailer, but it looks like a well-written film. I’m always a fan of clever marketing and certainly Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac had one of the best executed film marketing campaigns lately. It all started with a the minimalist, yet iconic teaser poster you can see above (Lars’ idea by the way) and then it went on to provide us with some orgasmic character posters, lots of appetizers and great interviews. Watch: First Trailer for David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars (2014) Starring Mia Wasikowska
Exciting news for David Cronenberg fans: The Canadian auteur is back with a new film called Maps to the Stars. The film was written by novelist and screenwriter Bruce Wagner, who’s not exactly a fan of Hollywood. According to Wikipedia, it’s a satire/drama, but looking at this first trailer it seems a lot darker than that. Cronenberg’s last two films (A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis) have been incredibly dialogue-heavy, but this looks like it could be a return to old school Cronenberg. I mean it’s not going to be body-horror, but it could be a thriller. Continue reading
Watch: First Theatrical Trailer for Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto (2013) with Emma Roberts
After releasing a teaser trailer back in August last year, it seemed that everyone had forgotten about Gia Coppola‘s debut feature Palo Alto. The film played at various film festivals, in Venice most notably, and is based on short stories by James Franco. Franco also stars in the movie as a supporting character. Emma Roberts is clearly the lead of the film, which looks to be a coming-of-age story about bored high schoolers. Also co-starring in this movie is Val Kilmer and other Coppola family friends (and relatives). Continue reading
Noah Inspiration: The Dove (1982) – A Poem by Darren Aronofsky
If the auteur theory has taught us anything it’s that for certain directors the storytelling process can get very personal. Many people have wondered why a critically acclaimed director like Darren Aronofsky would be interested in making Noah, a Bible epic. It turns out that the Jewish director was always fascinated with the story. In fact he wrote a poem about it in seventh grade, which won him a United Nations competition. The assignment was to write a poem about peace. 13-year-old Darren basically wrote his own interpretation of the Bible story, which he then went on to adapt into a $125 million film. Continue reading
Mogwais Exist! Were Joe Dante’s Creatures from Gremlins Inspired by the South Asian Langur?
Here’s something cute. It’s always fascinating to see where artists get their inspiration from. Sometimes it comes from the most obscure and random places like South Asia, and then it lands in one of the most beloved horror films of all time: Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984) produced by no one other than Steven Spielberg. The creatures in question are the iconic Mogwais, which bear a lot of resemblance with a real animal that lives in the Indian subcontinent: The Grey langur. The langur is a monkey of the Semnopithecus species and likes to chill in the Himalayan area and in Thailand. But what about late post midnight snacks? Continue reading
