Sexy New Posters for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac and More
A lot of new exciting Nymphomaniac news! I haven’t been updating for a while because it seemed like there was a new still, poster or clip released every day these past few weeks. However like sexual tension it can only build up so long before you just need a release. So here are a few goodies for you as the film’s debut in Denmark is nearing, Zentropa‘s promotion team is remembering audiences why they are considered marketing geniuses. With a film like Nymphomaniac, the very subject matter is controversial and enough to inspire media to write about it. Releasing sexy posters that get censored from Facebook and clips (the so called appetizers) that get removed from YouTube helps as well, of course. Not to worry, though: There’s always Vimeo and the film’s official website of course.
In this appetizer for Chapter 6: The Eastern and the Western Church (The Silent Duck) Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) receives a very special gift from K (Jamie Bell). A gift which she immediately wants to put into use and which you can see in one of the beautifully minimalist posters below. As a fan of minimalist artworks I think those posters are simple yet amazing. They seem to be capturing the film’s aesthetic and are all in line with the previous ones we’ve seen. The one with the fishing hook is for Nymphomaniac Volume I, whereas the whip poster is for Nymphomaniac Volume II.
Doing something slightly different, a third, black poster, which has surfaced more recently seems reminiscent of French erotic cult classic Historie d’O (starring Udo Kier). The genius of that poster, aside from fact that it references the original sin (with Charlotte Gainsbourg eating an apple, as Shia LaBeouf approaches to taste some kind of “forbidden fruit”) is that they’re black, which can have so many meanings (eroticism, luxury, exclusiveness etc). It also helps you focus on the actors, while having an odd Christmas feel to them.
It has now been cleared up how and when the film will be released. Since the original cut is a 5 hours 30 minutes epic they are going to divide it in two. To avoid censorship a 4 hours (2 hours for each volume) will be released in theaters. The censored version will still have an NC-17 rating, so don’t expect a “Disney cut”. Not to worry though: There will be an full, explicit, director’s cut at some point as Zentropa producer Louise Vesth herself promised.
Nymphomaniac Volume I hits theaters March 21st, 2014 (and VOD earlier on March 6th), while Nymphomaniac Volume II will be released on April 18th, 2014 (April 3rd on VOD). Those are the US release dates. I am thrilled to find out that in Switzerland some theaters will be releasing both volumes as soon as the 1st and 27th January 2014 respectively. Very exciting.
love lars but i’m not looking forward to shia in le buff
haha! good one 🙂 I applaud his boldness though.
I’m intrigued by this picture, but I wonder if Von trier isn’t just doing this to shock people – as opposed to doing it for artistic reasons. I’m going to want to see the complete, uncut version, though, so I guess I’ll wait for the home video version. I love the posters. I can’t wait. 🙂
Yeah, I know what you mean. You never know how much of it is marketing, but from what I hear it’s a very personal film and so it should be interesting. Glad to hear you’re looking forward to it! In theory I want to wait for the full version as well, but I don’t think I’ll be able to resist 🙂
Well, I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it! 🙂
